Expected to mark their second birthday in July of this year, the young victims’ lives were cut short in the incident that occurred around 10 am on Saturday, as confirmed by community leader Andrew Dogonyaro to the Daily Trust on Tuesday, May 29, 2024. Dogonyaro explained that the children, accustomed to visiting neighbors independently, had wandered from their home unnoticed that day.
Despite attempts by a bystander to remove them from the railway track upon hearing the train’s warning signals, it was tragically too late to prevent the collision.
The accident was initially reported at the police outpost in Sabon-Bwari and subsequently at the Sabon-Wuse Division in Tafa LGA of Niger State.
SP Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, affirmed the incident, stating that on May 24, 2024, a moving train en route from Abuja to Kaduna fatally struck two-year-old girls named Hassana Baro and Hussaina Baro as they played on the railway at Kuchiko village, via New-Bwari area in Tafa LGA.
Abiodun indicated that the case would be forwarded to the Railway Division in Kubwa, Abuja, for further investigation and appropriate action.
