UNN Suspends Lecturer Seen in Viral Video for Alleged Sex-for-Grades Incident

The University of Nigeria (UNN) has placed Mfonobong David Udoudom, a lecturer in the General Studies division, on indefinite suspension after a video surfaced allegedly showing him attempting to engage in sexual activity with a married female student.

Udoudom, who teaches in the General Studies Programme (GSP) Unit, was caught on camera in his office at the GSP complex on Monday, April 22, purportedly making advances towards a married woman. Reports suggest that he had asked for sexual favors in exchange for higher grades.

The student’s husband was notified, and with the assistance of the Dean of Student Affairs and university security, they set up a sting operation, leading to the lecturer’s capture.

UNN’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Dr. Okwun Omeaku, announced in a statement on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, that Udoudom’s suspension takes effect immediately and will remain in place pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation. The university is now looking into the incident through a disciplinary panel.

“The University of Nigeria has suspended Mr. Mfonobong David Udoudom, a lecturer in our General Studies division, who was caught on video allegedly engaging in sexual misconduct with a female student,” the statement said.

The suspension will continue until the investigation concludes, after which the university will take appropriate action based on the panel’s findings.

“We want to make it clear that UNN has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual misconduct involving our staff and students,” the statement continued. “The University of Nigeria has a Sexual Harassment Policy that outlines acceptable behavior and relationships between staff and students, as well as among male and female staff. We are committed to protecting our students from any form of abuse or exploitation. If found guilty, Mr. Mfonobong David Udoudom will be disciplined according to our regulations.”
