…Says She Made Transfer To Unidentified Car Dealer

On Thursday, 11th January 2024, Nigerian female street pop singer, rapper and songwriter, Akiode Blessing Mariam, also known as Candy Bleakz had cried out over alleged disapearance of all her savings in Wema Bank.
In a post shared on her X handle (formerly twitter), she claimed “Why me? I just want everyone to be fine. I just lost my everything, everything 8years of hustle my God why me? My dad, my mum and now ME!!!

On a fact finding mission, to unravel what actually transpired, our correspondent( photo story) got in touch with the Head, Brand & Marketing Communications, Wema Bank Plc, Mabel Adeteye to illuminate more on what happened. Her response via mail to this request reads:

“Twitter User @iamcandybleaks is currently a customer of Wema Bank.
We investigated her complaints and found out that In the process of ‘purchasing’ a car, @iamcandybleaks, the customer on Wednesday, 10th January, 2024 made a payment via transfer to an unidentified car dealer’s account in another bank. Unknown to her, this supposed car dealer (who she thinks is a fraudster) immediately stopped returning her texts or communicating with her; this was when she realized that she may have been defrauded.
“We were amazed to see her public outcry on social media, especially as she had failed to narrate the full story but portraying Wema Bank as the perpetrator or facilitator of the unfortunate incident.
” On seeing her post, we—as a bank that is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our customers’ funds/deposited immediately reached out to her via our Contact Centre to find out more information on the situation. Upon careful investigation, we confirmed that she had willingly made the transfer for the car purchase herself, which is why the transaction wasn’t flagged.”
” Furthermore, Regardless, we were committed to ensuring the alleged perpetrators don’t get away with the ‘crime’ and immediately, we took the initiative and reached out to the recipient’s bank who subsequently put a lien on the funds [Luckily for her, the amount in question was still in the recipient’s bank].
She further added: “In line with the industry policy, she has been duly informed to get the necessary documentation to kickstart the repatriation of her fund back to her account. We shall continue to support her through the process till her fund is returned to her account.
“Wema Bank as usual is committed to combatting fraud, being a support system for customers, and helping them achieve their personal and professional goals, statement concluded.”
